Human saliva is used as a diagnostic and prognostic fluid in oral and systemic diseases due to its properties like non-invasive, cost effective, real time and it can also be used for screening of large populations.
Changes in salivary physiology and biochemistry can be indicators of oral and systemic health of human body. This article reviews basic concept of chairside saliva diagnostics and role of dentists or oral physicians in diagnosis of oral and systemic diseases.
